Sterling Vineyards

I am not inclined to write about a wine I do not like. I would rather just forget it and move on to the next bottle. However, I do not like to give up on a bottle or a review that easily… I purchased the Sterling Vinter’s Collection Meritage on the recommendation of the 2009 Plonkapalooza judges.  I had originally intended to pair the wine with dessert (aka leftover Halloween candy) this weekend after our trick-or-treaters had made their way back home.  However, I had one sip and left the rest of the glass.  It was not what I had envisioned at all!  But to be fair, Starbursts and Kit Kat bars are not the most refined pairing options around…  I was convinced that having tasted the wine, I could come up with a dish that would compliment its earthy undertones and spicier flavor profile.  So the following day for lunch I came up with a pomegranate waldorf salad with tuna, pecans and a drizzling of balsamic vinegar.  I also added some sesame flat breads with melted smoked gouda on the side.  The spicy flavor of the dijon mustard, the sweetness of the balsamic and the smoky, Pomegranate Waldorf Saladnutty flatbreads proved to be a perfect compliment and I ended up enjoying the day old wine immensely!  In fact, I’d give it three stars when appropriately paired.  So remember, if you don’t care for a wine at first you should try to experiment before passing it off as a flop!

Arrogant Frog

Tags: , ,

Everybody does it.  It’s hard not to!  Sometimes, without knowing anything about a wine whatsoever you are inclined to pick it up purely because of the label.  This was one of those buys – Arrogant Frog.  Now, not only does the label have an adorable little cartoon frog, in a beret no less, but it is called Arrogant Frog!  Who can resist?  Well, after trying the Lily Pad Noir (a 100% Pinot Noir varietal wine), not only can I call the bottle irresistible but I can say the same for the wine itself.  Smooth, fruit forward, and it paired terrifically with the caprese salad I had prepared. A nice, easy-to-drink pinot that will pair with a variety of dishes.  It’s great to drink on it’s own, too!  So grab a bottle and enjoy this delightfully cliche little wine and make sure to let me know what you think!  I give Arrogant Frog Lily Pad Noir 4-stars.
